Swainson’s Hawk, Buteo swainsoni. Breeds throughout central and western North America, migrating to the Argentine area for winters. Their diet consists of insects and small mammals, more heavily hunting mammals and other small vertebrates during breeding season. Breeding ranges overlap with Red Tailed Hawks and Ferruginous Hawks, and they compete with each other for territories and prey. The Swainson’s Hawk can be found near humans, preferring hunting grounds of agricultural fields and prairies. This species displays two morphs, a light and a dark.
