Eastern Screech Owl, Megascops asio. Common and permanent residents from the central U.S. to the east, north up to the Canada border and south through eastern border of Mexico. Preferred habitat of lightly wooded areas of mainly deciduous. Can be found in suburbs as well, although as an owl they tend to hide away from humans. Diet consists of small rodents and mid- to large size insects. For mating season, males will perform a display for the female and bring her food. Being a small owl (~10 in.), they can be preyed upon by larger owls and predatory mammals that can get in trees. This species has three morphs: gray, brown, and red. Depending on their habitat, certain morphs may make them more successful and likely to survive.
