Northern Bobwhite, Colinus virginianus. Uncommon, local, and declining, ranging from midwest to the east coast, avoiding the Smoky mountains, with a few localized populations in the west. A small and round game bird found in rural brushy habitat. Their diet consists of seeds, grains, and berries, and will also eat small invertebrates. Males call from low perches that sounds like “bob-WHITE.” These quails exhibit regional polymorphism, with distinct male patterning differing in subspecies from the east, midwest, Florida, and southwest.
