Green Heron, Butorides virescens. Common but infrequent in areas near water. Breed throughout eastern U.S. and pacific northwest, wintering in central Mexico. A solitary species, coming together only for single-pairing mating, raising their brood together. They feed mainly on fish, frogs, and aquatic arthropods. Green Herons are one of the smallest herons, only around 17” long. This species is also known for their intelligence and tool use, using various materials to bait fish.
