Common Murre, Uria aalge. Also known as Common Guillemot, is a type of auk. Auks are a family (Alcidae) of seabirds related to gulls and terns. The Common Murre spends most of its time at sea in the sub-arctic and boreal waters. They nest monogamously on rocky cliffs in high density colonies, laying their eggs directly on the rock. Although they are fast fliers, they are more suited to the water, diving as deep as 590 ft/180 m. There are seven subspecies of the Common Murre, divided up between the sections of ocean where they range. Their diet consists mainly of fish, but will also eat various marine invertebrates.
