Black Tern, Chlidonias niger. Common in freshwater marshes across North America, Europe, West Asia, and North Africa. The American subspecies, C. n. surniamensis, breeds throughout Canada and winters throughout the U.S. and Mexico. This dynamic bird forages while flying, catching insects or skimming fish from the water. For breeding season, they will molt their body feathers from mostly white to a strong black.
