Atlantic Puffin, Fratercula artica. Common in nesting colonies along the eastern coast of Canada, spending the rest of the time out at sea or along the coast from Russia to North Africa. The diet of this seabird is mostly fish, with some crustaceans. When at sea, they are solitary, but become sociable when gathering in large colonies during breeding season. Pairs gather monogamously and build an underground nest, sometimes bringing in grasses or other material for bedding. The two other species of puffin are found in the north Pacific. Like many birds, the Puffin can see in the UV spectrum and it has been found that patterns in their bill fluoresce under UV light.
