Sora, Porzana carolina. The Sora is common and widespread across North America, breeding throughout and wintering in Central America. They live in marshlands, difficult to see through the reeds and dense vegetation that they spend most of their time in. Soras will forage while walking or swimming, eating seeds, snails, and insects. Soras are more likely to be heard than to be seen, calling with a slow, descending whinny. Like many water birds, the Sora is born precocial, meaning they are able to be fairly independent from birth, beginning to walk and swim the day of their hatching.
