STOP: Please do not pick up, move, or otherwise stress Lola out.
If Lola the Turtle appears in imminent danger (like being on a road), please carefully move her off the road in the direction she was headed when you found her. Lola is stubborn, she will turn around and head back in the direction she was going even if you think she ought to be going someplace else. If she is not on a road or otherwise in danger, please do not pick up or move Lola. She will urinate on you (bad) because she is scared. Losing urine is really dangerous for Lola as water can be hard to get for a terrestrial turtle such as herself (ie- she does not live in or around water like the turtles you see at the Koi pond on campus).
F208 Lola is a resident Ornate Box Turtle of Washburn University. She was originally found on campus by Dr. Beth O'Neil and we have tracked her movements on campus over the past 2+ years.
Lola has a radio transmitter on her back, this is how we track her movements day-to-day and across years. Lola is an 'ambassador turtle', which is why she has the QR code on her shell. The idea is you can learn about Lola while not interfering with her or displacing her (moving her). The transmitter is harmless to Lola and is super lightweight.
You can help the WU Turtle Team out by filling out the quick survey below about where you found her. You can also contact Dr. Benjamin Reed at [email protected] if you have any questions about Lola, box turtles, our box turtle research, or anything else pertaining to turtles. Please do not hesitate to reach out. Pictures are always welcome!
